Pet Parrots and You

Pet Parrots are the most lovely birds to have as a pet. Parrots are generally gracious pets that will provide you with companionship for many, many years to come.

Our site will teach you all about Pet Parrots and how to care for your large parrot. Generally people buy pet parrots that are large talking parrots or birds but did you know that a small budgie is still part of the parrot family?

Yes it’s true! Male Budgies can also learn to talk just like their larger pet parrot relations. Their cages and toys are obviously much smaller and handling a small pet parrot is easier than handling a large parrot but intrinsically they are very similar.

Pet parrots have been around for many centuries. Often when we think of pet parrots we think of Long John Silver with his pet parrot sitting on his shoulder. Talking Parrots are such fun to have around and there is definitely never a dull moment when you decide to buy a parrot as a pet.

My favorite pet parrots are the African Gray Parrots. I used to own a lovely one named “Groucho” but unfortunately I had to give him up due to personal problems. My African Gray Parrot became a part of my life and I miss him greatly. We will be talking more about african gray parrots later in other blog posts.

My sister used to breed pet parrots at home and so I have been around them for many years. Sadly my sister passed away and there was no way I could house the pet parrots in my small apartment so we had to put them up for adoption. They did end up going to very nice people but I felt a great loss after losing my sister and then having to part with the lovely birds.

I hope that you enjoy your time on my pet parrots site as we will talk about many things pertaining to pet parrots and especially talking parrots and birds.

Keep coming back and feel free to send your comments. I love to write about our pet parrots and by writing about them it helps to keep them, and my sisters and my love for them, with me in spirit.

Pet Parrots- Talking Parrots, Birds

When thinking of purchase pet parrots the most often asked question is which pet parrots are talking parrots?

Talking birds are so sought after it does seem a shame. Parrots can offer so much more than just their talking ability. Many people forget just how entertaining pet parrots can be without their talking ability. They are born entertainers and love to hang out with their favorite person and in their spare time play with their favorite parrot toys.

The truth of the matter is that many pet parrots do not learn to talk ever. Therefore if you are choosing a parrot for its talking you may be very disappointed.

Generally speaking, the larger the parrot the more chance you have of him talking, but this rule is definitely not hard and fast. Consider the little budgie, for example. This little guy can talk up a storm if trained properly.

The best pet parrots that are known for their talking ability of course is the African Gray Parrot. These are considered the most intelligent parrot in the pet bird world. But again, just because you buy an African Gray Parrot for a pet does not guarantee that it will talk.

I can tell you from personal experience that the Male parrots of any particular species is more likely to talk than its female counterpart. This may be perhaps that males are more communicative because they want to attract their special mate, in many cases which is it’s caretaker.

So what can you take away from this particular article?

  1. All Pet Parrots do not necessarily Talk
  2. Male Pet Parrots are more likely to Talk than their female counterparts
  3. African Gray Parrots are the most intelligent and generally thought to be the best talkers
  4. Don’t forget that Male Budgies are also great little talkers
  5. There is NEVER any guarantee that your pet parrots will talk, so learn to love them for who they are and not what they can say.

African Gray Parrot Shot by Owner During Nascar Race

Large African Gray Parrot What a very sad story I have to tell you. I just read in the Daily Record how a man shot the family’s pet parrot, an African Gray Parrot named Mickey, because he was annoyed by the noise that the large parrot was making while he was trying to watch his Nascar Race.

Apparently the man was intoxicated and had become annoyed at the pet parrot for making too much noise, so he pulled out a bb-gun and shot the poor defenseless parrot. The African Gray parrot had been a family pet for over 20 years. The man was charged with animal cruelty at least but it really is a sad, sad story.

Maybe you think that I speak about researching pet parrots before buying them too much in my blog. I know a lot of people don’t want to hear it but I really feel that someone has to step up to the plate and make people aware that purchasing pet parrots, especially the large parrots come with a cost. One of those costs is putting up with times of squawking and screaming from the pet parrots. This is part and parcel of parrot ownership.

In cases such as the story told about this man shooting the family’s pet parrot during his nascar race, lessons can be learned. Pet parrots are Noisy, you have to learn to live with this reality. If you have favorite shows that you wish to watch when your pet parrots are in the room, you may find this truly frustrating. Be realistic about what you expect from your large pet parrots. If you cannot stand noise then don’t bother purchasing one. If you have one and find it too noisy for your TV watching enjoyment then you have options. Don’t shoot the pet parrot. You could either, move the pet parrot and the parrots cage to another room, or have another TV set up in another room or the basement where you can enjoy your show without the noise of the screaming from your large or even small parrot.

It’s truly a shame that this poor African Gray Parrot was shot and killed. It is reprehensible what the man did to this poor creature. It truly makes me very sad. For more information on the story you can read the article in the Daily Record here:

Pet Parrots-Which Parrots are the Most Popular?

Although there are many websites and blogs about pet parrots and especially the large pet parrots such as African Grays and Macaws, it is surprising to find out that according to statistics it is not the large pet parrots that are the most popular. It is actually the small pet parrots that have taken the spotlight. It seems that although the American population is in a recession, this has not had any direct impact on their purchasing pet parrots and other pet birds to add to their household. These statistics are based according to the National Pet Owners Survey put out by the American Pet Products Association for 2009-2010

In the survey the results show that Cockatiels are the most popular of bird among pet owners and rate at 35% of the pet birds owned by families in America.

The small pet parrots species of parakeets or budgies actually became less popular in this Pet Survey and fell to 32% of pet parrots owned.

The third place is actually a three-way tie at only 8% of Pet Parrots owned are the larger African Gray Parrot, tied in place with Conures and Lovebirds.

Pet Parrots – How Much Is That Birdie in the Window?

pet parrots amazon If you are like most animal lovers, it is hard to pass a pet store without going inside and seeing all of the cute little pets that are being offered for sale. Pet Parrots are especially fun to watch as they climb up their cage rungs and do their flips and slides around their bird cages. Catching the acrobatics of these lovely pet parrots is quite amusing. It generally doesn’t take long before those old familiar questions come rising up inside asking “I wonder how much he costs?”

Pet Parrots vary in size and the larger the parrot, the larger the chunk from your pocketbook. Smaller species of the parrot family, such as budgies will cost your anywhere from $20.00 – $100.00 dollars, depending on whether they are hand-fed or not. Large Parrots, such as African Gray Parrots, Cockatoos and Macaws can cost about $2-3,000 dollars at the time of this writing. (August 2009).

When considering the purchase of pet parrots the cost of the actual bird is only a part of the equation. There are some basic things that are necessary no matter which type of pet parrots you plan on buying.

Parrot Cages: This is the next most expensive item necessary for your pet parrots and one that you should research very carefully. You will want to have a bird cage which is the right size for your potential playmate. Since you are planning (hopefully) on keeping your new little friend for a long time, you will want something that is not only large enough but also sturdy and easy to keep clean. A parrot cage that has a sliding tray at the bottom are the most convenient. This way you can just slide out the tray daily and clean the debris.

You will also want to look for a parrot cage that has water and feed dishes which are accessible from the outside of the cage. Especially when you bring your pet parrots home, they will require a certain amount of time alone to get used to their new environment. You will want to be able to change their food and water dishes daily without disturbing your pet parrots or making them too anxious.

I always suggest that you purchase the very best and largest cage you can afford for your pet parrots, because they can live a very long time. Some African Gray Parrots have been known to live to 75 years old. This is not the place to skimp on your pet parrots new home.

Parrot Toys of course are also necessary to keep your pet parrots busy and entertained. Again, don’t hold back on buying good parrot toys for your pet parrots. The little plastic ladders from the dollar store can become very dangerous if your bird were to break it and ingest the pieces. Always buy quality materials and you will save yourself money in the long run.Remember, Parrots like to chew everything so be safe with what you buy for parrots toys.

One last thing I would like to mention before ending is that you need to allow extra money for visits to an avian veterinarian. This should be one of the first priorities when buying your pet parrots. You need to be sure that they are in good health, and many people also want to have their pet parrots DNS tested to find out if they are male or female. Male parrots are generally the best talkers if you are looking for a talking parrot. Even little male budgies can be taught to talk also, so don’t give them up when considering pet parrots. If your budget is limited these little parrots can add many years of love and companionship just like their large parrot relatives.

I highly recommend that people purchase the course here below. It will save you a lot of problems when purchasing your pet parrots. Parrot care is a lot more involved than just providing toys for your parrot. You really do need to be informed on how to properly train your parrots, whether they are large or small and this DVD below is an excellent source to help you. Consider it one of the many expenses necessary for proper pet parrot care.

Pet Parrots – Knowledge is Power

Pet Parrots are such lovely creatures and it is so easy to fall in love at first sight. Be very careful to find out all that you can about your prospective purchase before you actually buy. Without this knowledge behind you, purchasing your pet parrots may end up causing you heartache and pain.

Many people see pet parrots which are owned by others or on videos, such as YouTube.com and immediately start to get ideas in their head about how much they too would love to have such a sweet companion in their own home.

Pet Parrots are truly adorable and they do make great companions, but….and a big but….what you see in your friend’s home or on videos is not exactly what you will get when you purchase your pet parrots.

The majority of persons who have purchased pet parrots in the past can tell you that they require a lot of time and attention devoted to them. In many instances, you will need to train your pet parrots (see our recommendation on the right of this blog post) if you wish them to become a loving member of your family. Sadly, it is a very common thing to see pet parrots purchased and then left by them-selves in some basement covered up to help deter their screaming. Here are just a few things you should be aware of before purchasing your pet parrots.

  • The Larger they are, the more time is required with them.
  • It is imperative that you spend a scheduled time each day with your new pet. Pet Parrots love schedule. They need to know what is going to happen when, in most instances.
  • Ask Yourself “Are you a scheduled type person?” if you are more of the laid back type, you may end up with a bird that is confused and lonely.
  • Screaming can truly become a big problem if you don’t know how to train your bird properly. Pet Parrots are loud to start off with, especially the Large Parrots.
  • All Birds love to greet the day and give their adieus to the evening sun. Be prepared for the noise. They cannot help this, it is in their genes and punishing them in any way for this is not being realistic.
  • If your pet parrots are not getting enough quality time with you they may start to pluck their feathers. Feather plucking can get very obsessive and so you will need to be sure that your pet parrots have lots of social time and plenty of parrot toys to play with.
  • Be prepared to be buying plenty of parrot toys as they chew through them very quickly.
  • Most pet parrots are very intelligent. Especially known for their great intelligence are the African Gray Parrots. They are known to have very great vocabularies and a very high I.Q. The more advanced pet parrots like these will require much more from you as they will get bored very easily if not stimulated. This can cause a very great demand on your time.
  • A smaller bird may be more suitable if you are looking at pet parrots but don’t have the time necessary to give as much attention to. Male budgies for example can very often be taught to talk and are not as noisy as their larger parrot counterparts. Because of this, they may be the best choice especially if you live in an apartment.
  • Bearing in mind the volume that pet parrots can reach, it is always best to keep in mind that the larger parrots are not suitable for apartment dwelling. You will definitely need a house if you plan on buying pet parrots such as the African Gray Parrot, the Cockatoo, or the Macaw, for example.
  • Pet Parrots like to bite. The bigger their beak the more damage they can cause. If you get the proper training with pet parrots before you purchase them, then this training will help to dissipate the likelihood of a major problem.
  • Most Pet Parrots like to bond with one person. They may change their allegiance from time to time but generally they bond with only one person in the household. This person may not be the one who is actually doing all the work for the bird. Just because you are there everyday, talking to your pet parrots, feeding them and playing with them, this is not a guarantee that they will choose you as their favorite. To help inhibit the over bonding of your pet parrots to any one particular person in the household it is important that all individuals of the family spend time with your new pet parrot daily.
